I am looking for a tutorials that will explain how & when to use the knife and slice tool?
ALSO, I would love if someone could get through my BRAIN what the heck the Transparence Flattner is all about.!

The transparency flattener helps you print overlaps and opaque graphics better in an output setting. It is basically for printing purposes. Adobe states this as the definition of that option.

“The Flattener cuts the original transparent objects apart and replaces overlapping transparent regions with a set of discrete, abutting objects called atomic regions, that are either vector objects or rasterized areas. Each atomic region stands on its own and does not rely on underlying or overlapping objects for its final appearance.”

The knife tool is to literally cut an object into your desired shape. The Slice tool is used in creating Web graphics to divide an image up into separate images for table or CSS layouts.

Thank you for taking the time to create these tutorials. I have been struggling with Illustrator for quite a long time. I have found that although PhotoShop and Illustrator have many of the same tools, they work much differently. Thanks again.

    macky:

The fastest way to trace an image is to use Live trace under OBJECT > LIVE TRACE.

The lowest but accurate way to trace something is to use the pen tool.

there is no such a thing as “transparent” background in illustrator. if you save anything as an .EPS or import into photoshop using cut and paste (smart object) method, it will always be transparent unless you put a colored box as a background of your object.
