Rounded Corners

1. Making rounded corners is EASY in Illustrator. Of course you can make rounded shapes in Illustrator but you can convert line path to rounded corners as well.

2. Make your path or line, and then just go to EFFECT > STYLIZE > ROUND CORNERS.

3. Set the radius of your choice, then hit OK.

4. You can go to the STROKE tab and change the stroke weight. I also like to round off the edges sometimes by hitting the middle button on the top right hand side.

Very helpful..thanks
Hi
I have tried this with a banner i made in photoshop cs4. I am importing the banner into Ai Cs3 but the rouding process will not work. Any ideas?
you cannot apply rounded corners to rasterized objects. it has to be a vector shape. you are doing the method backwards. you should create the rounded elements in illustrator and bring them into photoshop as a smart object.
you cannot import something from photoshop to illustrator and expect to use the vector effects on it.
I scanned in crayon drawings of race car tracks and traced over them and then tried this style on the paths. When I gave it back to them, I said its now a NASCAR approved track.
for some reason this will NOT work for me at all. I create a line with the line segment tool, just like u have in your example. Then I select all, and go to effect- stylize- rounded corners. I have my settings on pixels, I can put in as many as 500px, but nothing will happen. No curves at all. Help?
I have the same problem as Anonymous. Please help.
Line segment tool? I use a pen tool for any type of line creation with Illustrator. In CS3 and 4, Its under FILTER > STYLIZE > ROUNDED CORNERS. This tutorial is a bit out dated due to the fact that it was written using CS1 or 2. New version update will have updated illustrator tutorials. Please hang tight.
excellent!!
Thank you!!!
GREAT TUTORIALS, THANK YOU
@Anonymous: try using the pen tool
It works if you use the Pen Tool to create your line segments.
yes you can use the pen tool to achieve this too :)
@Chris: :)
thanks…
i am using cs5. why cant i found stylize > round corners?
i only found glowing edges.
I will look into this and post back a comment. Haven’t updated all the tutorials for CS5
not working for cs3
I’ve successfully applied rounded corners to a red rectangle that I’ve drawn. How can I make the now-white sharp corners in the background transparent? In other words, when I save for web and devices and preview it, it looks like a red rounded-edged square atop a white sharp-edged square of nearly the same size. I want the red square only as my final image!
Thanks!
@In need of help: you have to save it as a .png or .gif file in order for transparency to work. you also can’t have any background elements in illustrator. for instance, if you have a white box in the back, it won’t be transparent. you would have to make a separate file if a background color i applied to your document. in order for things to be transparent in illustrator, you cannot have a background element. and once that is done, save as a .png file and it should be transparent.
it’s great…..
In CS3, after draw a line, you open STROKE window, you may find tiny arrow button on the left of “Stroke” text. Double-click it and there are the same options as above to create rounded-corner. (found it after drawing lots of lines)
